Founded in 1999 and under the same ownership as the chic Watergate Bay Hotel in Northern Cornwall, the concept behind Extreme Academy was to create a ‘ski resort on a beach’ to make Watergate Bay a place where people could be active as well as relax. Extreme Academy’s sports school transformed the beach into a mixture of classroom, playground and the wild outdoors, offering lessons for people who wanted to try new sports or improve their skills in a range of activities.

The logo and typography took inspiration from a 1920’s Watergate Bay surf poster which hangs on the wall of the jointly owned restaurant next door to the academy. A series of hand-painted patterns inspired by the wild outdoors capture the extreme conditions associated with Northern Cornish beaches. A playful tone of voice and typography reflects the owners vision of creating a ‘ski resort on a beach’.
